Finding A Foothold Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving older adults, caregivers, and families in underserved communities throughout the greater Baton Rouge area. with a primary focus on the following ZIP codes:

As our partnerships and resources grow, we anticipate expanding our reach to serve additional communities throughout the Capital Region while remaining committed to providing meaningful, community-based fall prevention education and caregiver support where the need is greatest.

MISSION

Finding A Foothold Foundation empowers older adults in underserved communities to age safely and independently through fall prevention education, caregiver support, and community partnerships that help them remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month.

Falls prevention is at the heart of what we do all year long. This September, Finding A Foothold Foundation is intensifying our community outreach with eight falls prevention education and outreach events planned throughout the Baton Rouge metropolitan area.
We’ll be meeting older adults and caregivers where they live, gather, and receive services—providing practical education, resources, and connections that support safety, independence, and aging in place.

Why It Matters:

Falls are changing the health and wellness of families. Many adult children worry about their parents’ safety but overlook their own.

Keeping older adults safe and caregivers protected is critical as our aging population grows. Our programs teach practical ways to reduce fall risks, improve home safety, and prevent caregiver injuries through safer daily techniques and supportive environments.

We envision communities where older adults can age in place, remain in their homes for as long as possible, and experience autonomy and fulfillment — while family caregivers are empowered to provide support without sacrificing their own well-being.

Did You Know…

Older Adults:

9 out of 10 older adults want to remain in their homes for as long as possible.
1 in 4 experiences a fall each year, often leading to injury or loss of independence.
In 2023, more than 8,900 fall-related hospitalizations were reported in Louisiana among adults aged 55 and older—many of them preventable.

Caregiving:

1 in 5 caregivers experiences an injury while assisting with mobility or daily care.
Nearly 60% say their own health has declined due to caregiving.

Behind each number is a story of lost independence, caregiver strain, and a reminder that prevention saves lives.

Finding A Foothold Foundation was created to change that, reaching people before the fall, not just after.

Falls Free Friday Tip

Sandra was excited to have her family home for the holiday. She had been busy all day preparing for their arrival and couldn’t wait to spend time with her grandchildren. She was doing some last-minute tidying up as she sent her husband to the store to pick up a few forgotten items. The last thing she expected was a fall. The rug had been in her living room for years, and she had always been careful around it. But today was different. Her attention wasn’t on the rug—it was on getting everything ready for her family. It’s easy to become comfortable with hazards in our environment. Those hidden risks often become exposed when our attention is divided. Taking the time to make sure your home is safe is a priority we can’t afford to overlook. What are some other things Sandra could have done to make this situation safer?
